What a Six-Week Trial Found When Dogs With Arthritis Were Given Cannabis Oil
There is a moment most dog owners recognize. The dog who used to meet you at the door now takes an extra second to get up. The stairs get a pause at the bottom. The jump into the car turns into a look that asks for a lift. Arthritis in dogs rarely arrives as a single dramatic event; it settles in slowly, and by the time we notice, our dogs have usually been quietly working around the pain for a while.
A new study looked at exactly this problem, and it is worth walking through what it found and, just as importantly, what it did not. The research is genuinely encouraging. It also comes with a few caveats that matter for anyone thinking about cannabinoids for an older dog.
How arthritis hides in plain sight
Part of what makes canine arthritis hard is that dogs are built to hide it. In the wild, a limping animal is a vulnerable one, and that instinct did not disappear when dogs moved onto our couches. So the signs are usually quiet ones. A dog that is slower to rise after a nap. A little stiffness on the first walk of the morning that loosens up once he gets going. Less interest in the stairs, or in the games he used to start himself. A favorite spot by the window was traded for one that does not require a jump. None of these looks like pain in the way a yelp does, and that is exactly why they get missed until the condition is further along.
This is worth mentioning because the dogs in this study were already diagnosed with chronic osteoarthritis, which means their owners had already crossed the line from noticing to acting. For the rest of us, the early, easy-to-dismiss signs are the ones worth paying attention to, because arthritis is far easier to manage when it is caught before a dog has spent months compensating for it.
What the researchers did
A team based at veterinary schools and clinics in Chile ran a randomized, double-blind trial in dogs with chronic osteoarthritis. Twenty-seven dogs were split into three groups. One group received a full-spectrum cannabis oil, one received a placebo oil, and one received no treatment at all. Neither the owners nor the evaluators knew which dogs were getting the real oil while the trial was running, which is the design feature that makes the results worth taking seriously. When people know their dog is on active treatment, they tend to see improvement whether or not it is there; blinding is how researchers guard against that.
The dogs were followed for six weeks. The dose started low, at roughly 0.1 mg per kilogram twice a day, and was raised gradually to a maximum the dog could tolerate comfortably. Pain and mobility were tracked with two standard veterinary tools: the Canine Brief Pain Inventory, which owners fill out based on what they see at home, and a clinical osteoarthritis staging scale used by the veterinarians.
What they found
By day 28, the dogs on cannabis oil showed a 39.6% reduction in their pain inventory scores. The placebo group improved too, by 24.7%, and the untreated group actually got slightly worse, by 1.6%. On the clinical staging scale, just over half of the cannabis-treated dogs moved from a more severe stage to a milder one; none of the other dogs did.
Two things in those numbers are worth sitting with. The first is that the cannabis group clearly outperformed both comparisons, and the movement on the clinical scale, judged by veterinarians rather than owners, is the kind of result that is hard to explain away. The second is the placebo group. A 24.7% improvement in dogs given plain oil reflects the caregiver placebo effect, the well-documented tendency of owners who are giving a daily treatment, and hoping it works, to perceive and report improvement. That expectation is exactly what the untreated group lacked, whose owners knew their dogs were getting nothing, which is why those dogs showed no lift. It does not erase the cannabis result, which was larger and backed by the clinical staging, but it keeps the finding grounded.
Why cannabinoids might help a sore joint
The reason this line of research exists at all is that dogs, like us, have an endocannabinoid system: a network of receptors involved in regulating pain, inflammation, and mood. Cannabinoids interact with that system, and there is a plausible biological story for why they might take the edge off the inflammation that drives arthritis pain. Osteoarthritis is not only wear and tear; it is an inflammatory process, and inflammation is one of the things the endocannabinoid system helps modulate.
This is worth being careful about, because it is where CBD content tends to overreach. The trial does not show that cannabinoids repair a damaged joint or reverse arthritis. What it shows is a measurable reduction in pain and an improvement in comfort and movement over six weeks. For an older dog, comfort and movement are most of what we are actually hoping for.
What the study did not prove
This was a small trial. Twenty-seven dogs are enough to detect a real effect, but not enough to tell us how well it holds across breeds, sizes, and stages of disease, and not enough to catch rarer side effects. A larger and longer study would tell us much more.
There is also a detail that matters a great deal for how you read this, and it is the reason this article will not pretend the study is something it isn’t. The oil used in the trial was a full-spectrum cannabis extract that contained THC, not only CBD. That is legal in the veterinary research setting where this work was done, but it is not what hemp-derived CBD products in the United States are. THC carries real risks for dogs, and no dog should be given a product containing meaningful THC. So the cleanest way to read this trial is as evidence that cannabinoids, working through the endocannabinoid system, can reduce arthritis pain in dogs, rather than as a direct endorsement of any one product. The active ingredient family is promising; the specific formulation in the study is not something you would hand your dog at home. The benefit, though, is understood to come from CBD rather than the THC. An earlier randomized, placebo-controlled trial of a CBD-forward hemp oil with only trace THC (Gamble et al., 2018) reported less pain and more activity in dogs with osteoarthritis, which points to CBD as the cannabinoid that matters here. The wider evidence base is still growing, so this is encouraging support rather than proof.
Finally, six weeks is a reasonable window to see a change in pain, but arthritis is a years-long condition. We do not yet know what daily cannabinoid use looks like for a dog over months and seasons.
The one habit worth borrowing from the study
There is a detail in how the trial was run that is worth carrying home regardless of what product a dog owner eventually chooses. The researchers did not start the dogs on a full dose. They began very low, at roughly a tenth of a milligram per kilogram, and raised it slowly over days, watching how each dog responded before going higher. This “start low, go slow” approach is the standard advice for cannabinoids in animals, and it is sensible for two reasons. Dogs vary enormously in how they respond, and a dose that suits a small terrier is not the dose for a large shepherd. Starting low also gives you room to notice side effects, most often mild drowsiness or a change in appetite, before they become a problem.
The practical version of this, for an owner working with their veterinarian, is patience. Cannabinoids are not a switch you flip; they are something you titrate toward, watching your own dog rather than a chart. The dogs in this study were followed and adjusted individually, and that individualized approach is a real part of why the results looked the way they did.
A word on where our products fit
Because this is written for a store that sells hemp-derived CBD, the line between the research and the shelf is worth being plain about. This study tested a full-spectrum extract containing THC, given under veterinary supervision in a country where that is permitted. The hemp-derived CBD chews and tinctures made for dogs in the United States are a different, THC-conscious category, formulated to support comfort and mobility rather than to treat a diagnosed disease. The clearest way to hold both facts together is this: the research strengthens the case that cannabinoids can ease arthritis pain in dogs, and a quality hemp-CBD hip-and-joint product is a reasonable, lower-risk way for an owner to explore that in partnership with their vet. What no responsible product should claim is that it cures or treats arthritis. It supports a dog’s comfort; the dog’s veterinarian manages the disease.
What we take from it
Here is where the research leaves us, in plain terms. In a well-designed trial, dogs with arthritis given a cannabinoid oil experienced a meaningful drop in pain and a real gain in mobility, larger than placebo and confirmed on a clinical scale. That is a genuinely useful signal for a condition where our options are often limited to managing discomfort rather than curing anything. What we still do not know is how large the effect is across many dogs, how it holds up over the long run, and how much of the benefit comes from CBD specifically versus the other compounds in a full-spectrum extract.
If your dog is slowing down, the first conversation is still with your veterinarian, who can rule out other causes and make sure a cannabinoid product will not interact with anything else your dog is taking. For owners already exploring hemp-derived CBD as part of a joint comfort routine, this study is a reason for measured optimism, not a miracle claim. Our dogs cannot tell us where it hurts. Research like this is one of the few ways we get to close that gap a little.
