Thirty adults with moderate to severe insomnia were recruited for the trial. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: one group received 150 mg of CBD every night for two weeks, while the other group received a placebo.

The CBD or placebo dose was taken about an hour before bed, giving time for the effects to take hold as participants settled into their nighttime routine.

Are the results encouraging? People in the CBD group didn’t just sleep a little more efficiently; they also reported feeling calmer, clearer, and better balanced throughout the trial. 

Unlike many sleep medications, CBD did not cause morning grogginess, memory lapses, or coordination issues, showing that the next day’s mental clarity remained intact.

Why This Could Be Good News for You

Even a modest improvement in sleep efficiency means more minutes actually asleep, and that adds up over time. The fact that people felt better overall is just as important. A calmer, more settled mood can set the stage for better nights and brighter mornings.

  • Well-being improved. Participants reported feeling calmer and more balanced overall.
  • No next-day fog. Unlike many prescription sleep medications, CBD did not impair memory, attention, or coordination.
  • Side effects were minimal. The most common was dry mouth, with no serious adverse events reported.

How CBD Supports a Calmer Night

Here’s what researchers believe CBD may be doing to support better rest:

  • Balancing stress systems. CBD may help regulate the body’s hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is often overactive in people with insomnia.
  • Boosting melatonin production. Evidence suggests CBD may play a role in supporting natural melatonin, the hormone that helps set sleep-wake rhythms.

This makes CBD quite different from medications that “knock you out.” Instead, it appears to support the body’s own systems, creating the right conditions for sleep to unfold naturally.

Traditional sleep options each come with trade-offs:

  • Prescription sedatives may help you fall asleep quickly, but they carry risks of dependence and memory issues.
