Keep Your Dog Calm this Fourth of July

Fourth of July is just around the corner, which for many pet owners means it’s time to start planning how to cope with this year’s fireworks. For most of our 4-legged friends, fireworks can be threatening and anxiety-inducing. The loud, unpredictable noises make them feel threatened and result in barking, whining, and hiding. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help your dog cope with fireworks and stay calm this Fourth of July:

Take Them for a Run or Walk

Just like how exercise can help humans ease anxiety, exercise is a great way to keep dogs calm and at ease as well. Plan to start your holiday off right by taking your dog out on a long walk in the morning. This activity will tire out your dog and help them deal with the fireworks later in the day.

Set Up a Safe Space

As we mentioned in our Holiday Weekend Wellness Tips blog, a great way to help your pet cope with fireworks and other triggering noises is to create an area where your pet can retreat to and feel secure. Choose a spot in your house where your pet usually likes to relax that will also buffer the sights and sounds of the fireworks, such as a walk-in closet or a room with blackout curtains. Fill it with comfortable beds and some favorite toys, and make it extra awesome with playtime or treats.

Play classical music or white noise

The problem with fireworks isn’t that they’re loud; it’s that they’re unpredictable. Drowning out the sudden noise of the fireworks with another, more predictable noise, like classical music or white noise, is a good way to distract your dog from the celebration. Try closing all the doors and windows in your house as well to try to eliminate the sounds.

Try CBD

CBD is another great and natural option to help ease your pet’s stress and anxiety. CBD has been proven to be a safe and healthy way to reduce anxiety and pain in dogs. We carry many pet-friendly CBD products, including Bailey’s CBD. Bailey’s is a family-owned and operated pet brand selling the only best CBD for dogs, cats, horses, and other pets. Hopefully, these tips can help you and your pet have a happy and relaxing Fourth of July weekend!
