Memorial Day Wellness

While known as the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day is also a day of remembrance and appreciation. As we honor the men and women who have died while on duty with the US military, this can be an emotionally draining and trying time for people who have lost friends and loved ones serving overseas. Below is a list of ways you can celebrate while promoting self care and wellness this Memorial Day:

1. Attend a Memorial Day Service

Memorial Day ceremonies — in person and virtual — are slated across North County and in San Diego. Though several have been canceled because of the pandemic, there are still many  events to remember and honor military members who died serving this country. For a full list, click here

In Oceanside, The Veterans Association of North County will hold a remembrance from 10 a.m. to noon in the VANC Resource Center, 1617 Mission Ave. 

Eternal Hills Memorial Park will host a pre-recorded online Memorial Day remembrance service that will be available on its Facebook page at 11 a.m.

The Mission San Luis Rey Parish will hold a Memorial Day Mass at 10 a.m. at the Mission cemetery, 4050 Mission Ave. 

2. Write a Letter to Servicemen and Women

What better way to honor our troops and support those currently fighting for our country than to let them know how much we appreciate their service? Take a few minutes to write a letter (or several!) to servicemen and women, either those you know or through an organization that mails letters and packages to those abroad. Operation Gratitude is a great site where you can donate and write thank you letters to the military. 

3. Get Moving Outside

Moving your body is an essential part of taking care of yourself and relieving stress. Bring your yoga mat to the beach, find a new trail to hike with friends or take a walk around your neighborhood. Not only will you still get in a solid workout, but you’ll burn off anxiety, release endorphins and feel great.
