Dealing with Election Anxiety

With the election nearly one week away, you may find yourself feeling more anxious than usual. The seemingly endless stream of news, debates, polls and even ads and videos you’re seeing online is enough to stress anyone out. If you’re experiencing election anxiety this month and finding it difficult to stay positive, here are a few ideas to help you stay relaxed and calm when anxiety strikes.

1. Vote

Above all else, get out there and cast your ballot! Though it might not seem like it, your vote can make a huge difference and have an impact on policies and measures at all levels. Taking part in this election can make you feel empowered and give you a voice amongst all the noise and craziness across media platforms.

2. Get Outside

Spending some time in nature, away from the constant election updates, is a great way to reset and destress. Try taking a walk, running, hiking, or simply spending an afternoon at the park or beach. The fresh air and the break from screens will allow your brain to refresh and recharge when you’re feeling anxious.

3. Exercise

With everything going on, exercise may be the last thing on your list when trying to combat election stress and anxiety.  But during these chaotic times, exercise can help your body release endorphins, improve your mental health, help you sleep, and improve your overall wellness. Next time you are feeling anxious, try running, biking, walking, hiking or yoga.

4. Meditation

Meditation has become a popular activity during quarantine as people attempt to achieve a state of calm and tranquility despite all the craziness. Meditating, either on your own or with an app, for just 10 minutes a day can help you relax and relieve stress and anxiety. Research has shown that focusing on your breathing and the present for a few minutes each day can have a positive impact on your stress levels and overall wellness.

5. Try CBD

If you need to feel calm and relieve some anxiety and stress, CBD can help. CBD tinctures, topicals, edibles, and more will calm your mind and help with sleep, aches, pains, and other stressors. When you cannot seem to escape the constant politics and election news, CBD can be an easy way to ease the stress.

Until the election is over, give yourself permission to shut off your notifications, relax and unwind in whatever way works best for you. Though it is easy to feel helpless and overwhelmed as the election approaches, remember that there are several ways to destress and ease your mind.
